As a public institute for research, education and innovation, the University of Bordeaux has all the levers at its disposal to support societal and environmental transitions on its campus sites and with its partners. To do so, it relies on its highly-dedicated communities.
Thanks to its highly dedicated communities involved in a range of initiatives, the University of Bordeaux has been implementing a societal and environmental transitions roadmap since 2021 as part of its 2030 strategic plan. Its objective is to undertake transformative action on its own and with its regional and economic partners to meet the challenges of the environmental, social, economic and political crises of the Anthropocene era. Each and every community member can contribute to these transitions through their individual or collective actions and find their place within the wide-reaching project.
Relying on several framework programmes, which support this trajectory, in particular the ACT, InnovationS, ENLIGHT and RESET projects - the University of Bordeaux aims to become a university of reference in terms of societal and environmental transitions, by helping the transition initiatives expand to the metropolitan, regional and international scale. In October 2023, its first report on the Sustainable Development Goals highlights all the actions already undertaken in light of the international standard established by the UN.
This is why the University of Bordeaux has developed the appropriate steering and operational tools, including the creation of a vice-presidency dedicated to societal and environmental transitions, the implementation of an impact steering and data dashboard system, as well as the launch of a body in charge of initiating, leading and empowering initiatives, jointly developed with regional partners, on the local and European scale.
A University of Bordeaux statutory body, the Council for Societal and Environmental Transitions provides support for the implementation of the university's policy in the field of societal and environmental transitions. It is also responsible for examining, analysing and making proposals or requests related to the university's societal and environmental impact.

Following the example of the most efficient organisations, the University of Bordeaux, which is the owner of its campus sites and property assets, is setting up sensors and indicators that allow it to measure its environmental impact and consequently objectify the curves that need to be lowered (greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, waste, etc.) or raised (responsible purchases, self-produced renewable energy, biodiversity on the campus sites, energy sobriety in buildings, etc.).
Supported by a network of staff and student "advisors" and "ambassadors" for transitions in all aspects of the university, the policy of low-carbon consumption is paired with a policy for improving campus life and the quality of life at work. Gender equality, adapting to disabilities, mental health in the student population, food quality as well as the fight against harassment and discrimination are all indicators of a societal transition linked to environmental transitions.
Aware of its responsibility, the university has set up an independent body to evaluate its policy - the Council for Societal and Environmental Transitions - and will undergo external audits as part of the Sustainable Development & Social Responsibility (DD&RS) certification.

Institute for Transitions (in French)
Ambassadors for Transitions are students employed by the University of Bordeaux to raise the student community's awareness of societal and environmental issues.
Their mission is to promote good practices and initiatives for involvement, disseminate them on campus and be a facilitator in their communities.
They are a great way to provide information and highlight the needs of the student community.

The University of Bordeaux's transition in the face of the social and environmental challenges cannot be achieved without the active participation of all the university's stakeholders, including the student community, which will have a key role in implementing the roadmap.
Transition advisors play a crucial role in integrating transition issues at the heart of the University of Bordeaux.
Within their different entities (colleges, research or administration), they act as facilitators and raise awareness about the challenges of societal and environmental transitions.
Working as sources of information, they participate in sharing and disseminating good practices, as well as implementing collaborative tools.

Societal and environmental transitions are addressed at the University of Bordeaux by an extensive, multidisciplinary team, spread throughout the different university departments:
Above all, I see myself as a catalyst and a spokesperson for the wide range of initiatives that emerge from the laboratories: a catalyst by helping the initiators to make their initiatives a reality and a spokesperson by participating in the dissemination of those initiatives.
