The University of Bordeaux is the second top university in France in the INPI list in terms of the number of patent applicants in France (2023). By supporting and assisting researchers who produce results of research focusing on high-potential breakthrough innovations that create value for the future, the University of Bordeaux, together with its affiliate Aquitaine Science Transfert, shows that its strategic approaches fuel an ambitious innovation policy.

The University of Bordeaux has a catalogue of patents and software that are free to use and that have been developed by researchers. These technologies can be made available to companies through an operating licence (royalty-bearing contract for the use of a patent or software) or repurchase. They are relevant for all types of sectors (health, mobility, aeronautics, digital technology, etc.) and can help a company meet or expand its market.

It is also possible for any company to call on the knowledge and skills of the University’s researchers. Much like patents and software, know-how can be subject to an operating licence.

Example of a patent with Hemangiol

In 2007, a team of university professors-hospital practitioners (University of Bordeaux/University Hospital) discovered that a drug, popanolol, was effective against a benign vascular growth in children called infantile haemangioma. With support from the SATT AST (at the time called Aquitaine Innovation), the team was able to apply for a patent for this discovery and contact a company called Pierre Fabre to set up an operating licence. The licence is still valid and every year the company pays the University and the University Hospital royalties on the sales of the drug. Among other things, the royalties attract investors but also help to fund research projects within two laboratories and departments with which they are associated.
